Nicolas Cage, star of the new meta-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, responds to Ethan Hawke’s praise of his acting.

Nicolas Cage responds to Ethan Hawke’s praise and humbly brushes his compliment aside. Cage is well known for his prolific career and expressive style of acting which has also made him the face of countless memes. With a film career spanning four decades, the actor is well known for his roles in action thrillers like and , and even managed to snag an Oscar for his role in Leaving Las Vegas. On the opposite end of the spectrum, his ability to become a meme is due to his more eccentric films such as his starring role in the 2006 remake of the horror film The Wicker Man. Recently, he garnered critical attention for his role in the poignant film Pig,where he continued to demonstrate his wide range of acting abilities despite being snubbed by the Academy Awards for a nomination. His newest action-comedy, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, comes out at the end of this month and will serve as an homage to many of Cage’s most iconic and memorable roles.

Marlon Brando is another actor who was well known for his inspired approach to acting and is considered by many to be one of the best actors of the 20th century, if not one of the best actors to ever grace the silver screen. One of his most influential roles was as mafia patriarch Don Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film The Godfather. Brando won an Oscar for his performance but declined the award to draw attention to Hollywood’s inaccurate portrayal of Native Americans in film. Ironically, Nicolas Cage is related to the legendary director of the Godfather trilogy, but changed his name early into his career to avoid accusations of nepotism. Back in 2013, Hawke originally made his appreciation of Cage’s acting clear with a comment about how Cage is “ the only actor since Marlon Brando that’s actually done anything new with the art of acting.

Cage recently hosted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on the Lionsgate Reddit account, and when user Idk_very_much asked Cage what his thoughts were on Hawke’s comment, he responded by first praising Hawke by saying that he’s “ always been spellbound by his talent.” He moved on to say that his personal acting choices were influenced by actors from the silent film era, the stylized Japanese form of theatre known as Kabuki, and actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood like James Cagney of Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) fame. Cage finished his response by saying that the couldn’t take credit for creating something new when “ those elements are always on [his] mind.” His full response can be read below:

Hollywood actors, especially method actors such as Cage, are not usually known for crediting others for their unique talents. Instead, they’re more well known for their over-the-top and occasionally obnoxious antics such as those of Jared Leto on the set of Morbius. It stands as a testament to Cage’s character as an actor that he recognizes the sources he draws inspiration from, even if some would argue that he has created a style of acting that is wholly unique to him. The fact that the original comment was made by Hawke almost ten years ago and it’s still being brought up to Cage shows how much fans credit him with bringing something new to the age-old art of acting. Cage’s response shows grace, humility, and a love of the art in all of the various forms that it has taken across the globe over time.

However, Cage’s newest film, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which he stars in and produced, will either be a loving self-referential homage to the variety of roles that have brought the actor fame, or it may result in the audience being forced to watch Cage relive his glory days. Regardless of the film’s outcome, what can’t be denied is that Cage’s lengthy body of work is something to be admired. Nicolas Cage’s ability to jump from action thriller to horror and voice acting for animation is nothing short of incredible, and his unique performances can likely hold their own against even the great Marlon Brando.
